Seals for pistons with guide rings made of acetal resin used in earthmoving machinery, in the presence of water hammer or when the machine operates under very heavy conditions, sometimes experience the melting of the plastic part with the deposition of carbon particles on the guide surface. Seals without guides, on the other hand, show traces of exposure to very high temperatures with burns and carbonization in the sealing area in direct contact with the fluid. Research conducted in collaboration with cylinder manufacturers and major hydraulic component producers has helped explain the phenomenon. Oil in a hydraulic system contains air. This air can be released due to vibrations and form pockets that naturally also contain oil vapors. If this air-oil mixture reaches a ratio of 7.5 to 1 by weight and a temperature of 200-250 °C (which can be reached with a pressure of 100 bar), it can spontaneously ignite, as in a Diesel cycle engine.

Chemical resistance of materials

They refer to the volume change or chemical attack observed on elastomer specimens after immersion for a period of seven days in a fluid sample.
